Video Phones, Are They Worth the Time and Money?

As you may have already heard of the term "video Phone", you may not know of some of the value it can offer. Of course, there are pros and cons to everything, even technology. I am here to tell you the ins and outs of this advancement in telecommunications. You're probably thinking, okay, well what type of value can I acquire from a video phone? How does instant gratification sound? What I mean by this is that you can not only see the person you are speaking to, but also in "real-time", unlike other methods used via your computer. If you travel a lot like I do, a video phone allows you to see your loved ones when you are away. The value alone from this is priceless. Think about being able to see your wife, husband or children when you are away from home. Technology is amazing and we should be thankful that we are able to have this type of technology available to us.
Let's discuss some other pros of the phone. First, there is definitely plenty of variety to choose from as well as in many different price ranges. Prices may range from $99 to $799. One particular video phone boasts portability as well as a digital picture in "real-time". How can you go wrong with that? Video phones may also cost less money than what you're currently paying for on your telephone bill and it allows you unlimited monthly calls anywhere in the world for one low price. Not only has technology advanced, but it may also be less expensive. Many of the models (even the less expensive ones) have the same features (call-waiting, speaker phone, re-dial, etc). Some video phones may even have more features than your current telephone. Some additional features may include call-forwarding and video voice mail. Video voice mail allows you to leave a video of yourself or anyone you choose when you are not available to answer your video phone. Call forwarding enables you to forward your missed calls to another telephone number, including your cell phone number. I never miss a call when I am traveling because all of my calls are directed to my cell phone. A convenient feature some video phones provide is that it allows you to maintain your video phone account on-line. It enables you to make any changes to your billing, account information or features right on your computer.
Great, so far so good, right? Do I need to have a PhD in technology to use and install a video phone? The answer is no. The installation of most video phones are "plug-n-play" technology, even my 2 year old son knows how to use one. What does "plug-n-play mean"? It's just a fancy way of saying all you need is high-speed cable or DSL and you are set to go! Literally, plug in the cord to an electrical outlet and then to your DSL or cable line and your ready to receive and send calls via VIOP technology. Yes, another "scary" word. All this really means is Voice over IP address. This is the same technology used when you are on-line using your computer and acquiring the internet. It's that easy! However, be aware of some models that require both an internet connection as well as a telephone line. This would not be considered "plug-n-play". Another great feature allows your video phone to be used as a digital picture frame when not in use. You can actually show off pictures of your family or even your vacation pictures. Okay, so what are the cons of a video phone? Well, if the person you are calling does not have a video phone then you will not be able to see them. However, some models allow you to use the phone just like you use a regular phone if the other person you are calling does not own a video phone. This technology obviously is not for everyone, just as cell phones and microwaves are not in every persons home. Please keep an open-mind and choose the right model that fits your personal needs.
